After what most would agree was an action-packed Oscar ceremony, Will Smith has finally released a statement where he apologizes to Chris Rock for his act of violence against the comedian.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line, and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behaviour has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.
I am a work in progress, said Smith”
Smith took to the stage at this year’s Oscars 2022 event and slapped Chris Rock across the face after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett’s hair (Will Smith’s wife).
Will was thereafter given the best actor award for his role in the 2021 movie – King Rochard.
People took to social media with mixed reactions, while some commended Will for defending his wife’s honour, others condemned his act of violence stating that he should’ve been escorted out of the building.
The truth is that Chris Rock was not smacked because he insulted Jada nah, it was because Jada rolled her eyes to Smith and he had to do something. The joke was funny that's why Will Smith laughed as well

Will Smith gives an apology on instagram???? Chris Rock is actually the one that demonstrated class. I never want to see or hear from Will or Jada Smith again. They are losers and crass. Their kids are WEIRD…

Not only am I extremely disturbed by Will Smith’s actions, but also by those who are condoning it. Will initially laughed at the joke, then did a 360 after seeing that Jada was not impressed with it, that’s when he decided he needed to exercise his version of chivalry. Not cool. pic.twitter.com/0mu47NBqNo

I hope that Will & Jada did not get Black Americans "ghosted" from the entertainment industry for being too sensitive, too emotional and risky for public violent behavior. This couple is a nasty mess. pic.twitter.com/2t8CS1tfhc

It was reported by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) that none of the parties involved had filed a police report.
It is said that Smith will not lose his Oscar, but the Academy is considering some type of sanction, including a potential suspension of his Academy membership.
