JOHANNESBURG | Eskom issued a statement on Wednesday the 29th of September 2021 that encourages citizens to claim Free Basic Electricity (FBE).
FBE is the electricity allocated to support low-income households. It is the amount of electricity considered enough to power basic lighting, basic media access, basic ironing and boil water using an electricity kettle.

Indigent households can benefit from a long-running government project run by Eskom and municipalities that attempts to improve their quality of life. Customers are urged not to miss this relief, as it can have a positive impact on their everyday lives.
“We urge all customers who have been advised by their respective municipalities that they do qualify for the FBE benefit to make use of it,” Eskom stated.

Furthermore it was stated that the customers who are interested in claiming the benefit should visit their nearest vendor and are also given an alternative of using their personal cellphones with the USSD codes *130*869# or *130*269#.
The Indigent households are identified by the local municipality, 50 kWh to 60 kWh maximum per household to be used depending on the municipality of residence and a customer will be charged for exceeding the limit granted.
