Following a dramatic end to the transfer window, there were many hits and misses for some clubs and players. Here are some of the biggest highlights of what took place!
The return of Christian Eriksen to the Premier League has to be the biggest talking point of the deals completed on deadline day. The 29-year-old penned down a six-month contract with Brentford, with an option to extend by a year.
This follows after the Danish international spent seven months out of action after suffering from a cardiac arrest during the UEFA European Championship on their opening match against Finland. Eriksen returns to the Premier League having played for Tottenham Hotspurs, which are currently coached by Antonio Conte, who managed the playmaker at Inter Milan last season.
Spurs had the busiest end to the transfer window, which saw the signing of Rodrigo Bentacure on a permanent deal and Dejan Kulusevski on loan from Juventus. These signings saw the exit of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and Bryan Gil out on load, while Dele Ali completed a permanent move to Frank Lampard’s side Everton. Steven Bergwijn’s move to Ajax collapsed in the last hours of deadline day, with Conte preferring to keep the player at least until the end of the season.
Manchester United saw Donny Van De Beek finally secure a move out of Old Trafford, which saw him signing a loan deal with Everton, winning the race against Crystal Palace after the Toffees agreed to cover the full salary of Van De Beek. Jesse Lingard’s wish to leave the club on loan failed after the club rejected a last-minute loan deal with Newcastle. Despite the player pushing for the move, the club insisted that Lingard would be a key player for United in the second half of the season.
Staying Newcastle, the Magpies managed to complete the move of Aston Villa defender Matt Target on loan and center-back Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion. Having made several key signings on this transfer window, the world’s richest club is expected to move up the relegation zone in the second half of the season.
The forced loan move by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal to Barcelona is arguably the most dramatic deal during this January deadline transfers, which saw the deal seemingly called off after the Gunners had claimed that they knew nothing about the departure of the Gabonese international to Spain, but later revived in the later stages of the transfer window. Meanwhile, Ousman Dembele will remain with the Spanish giants after being linked with Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Spurs throughout deadline day.
Aaron Ramsey also secured himself a move from Juventus to the Scottish Premiership Champions Rangers on loan until the end of the season.
