As anticipated, the convicted troublesome director pleaded guilty to the charges against her. Myeni was accused of revealing the identity of a State Capture witness who was known as Mr X regardless of an order to keep the witness’s identity under wraps.
Mr X is the owner of a construction company which is alleged to have received three payments in excess of R3 million from Premier Attraction 1016 which turned out to be a company owned by Myeni’s son, Thalente.
The former chairperson has been slapped with a two-year jail term or a R120 000 fine for disclosing the identity of a protected witness at the State Capture Inquiry. The magistrate is quite satisfied with the sentence given to Myeni.
The starting amount was R120 000 but with half of it being suspended then she will be paying an overall amount of R60 000. Both the sentences are suspended by five years, therefore if Dudu Myeni chooses to pay the fine, she is required to pay the first installment of R30 000 today and the remaining R30 000 by the 29 August.
Should she fail to pay the fine then she will face two years in prison. Her conduct was previously criticized by the Right2Know Campaign which accused her of placing an important whistle blower in danger.
A few matters were considered during the sentencing by the court and according to her lawyer “the accused one, is a first-time offender with no previous convictions, she will be turning 60 years old in October this year and is not gainfully employed therefore she does not earn any income. She has not earned a steady income since 2017 and is currently surviving on support from her family’’.
