Mashaba grappled with these issues during his tenure as the mayor of Johannesburg under the Democratic Alliance (DA). He was labelled xenophobic by South Africans, who disliked his approach.
“The current government has allowed international criminal syndicates to hi-jack our buildings, and make life difficult for South Africans.”
“Under ActionSA, no one is going to be in this country if you do not have the documentation,” adds Mashaba to an eruption of applause.
“We are going to ensure that we put pressure on Home Affairs – it is their constitutional responsibility to protect our borders.
“We will ensure that for you to run a hair dressing salon, for you to be able to run a shop – you must have the papers to be in South Africa,” Mashaba said.
Mashaba adds, the importance of working with the private sector to rejuvenate inner-city buildings.
“They were ready to work with us… We said, whatever you do, minimum 30% must go to low-cost rentals of up to R1 000 per month,” he adds.
ActionSA has been transparent about contesting Gauteng’s three metros namely: Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.
The party has since announced Mashaba, Abel Tau and Letlhogonolo Moseki as mayoral candidates for Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni respectively.
Mashaba is Jhb’s mayoral candidate for municipal elections. In 2019, Mashaba resigned as Joburg’ mayor and later as a member of the DA.
"The prosperity of South Africa and the ANC cannot co-exist.
One must die, and it can't be South Africa!"

In August 2016, Mashaba was sworn in as Johannesburg mayor, becoming the first non-ANC Johannesburg mayor since 1994.
Mashaba spent three years at the helm after the African National Congress saw a 50% decline in the 2016 local government elections.
