Thuli Madonsela was presented with the Knight of the Legion of Honour, which is the highest French order of merit on Monday, April 19, 2021.
The award was presented to her by the French Ambassador to South Africa, Auréllen Lechevaller on behalf of the French Presidency at the Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Madonsela is the first South African to be awarded by the France government.
The award-winning legal expert was honoured for defending human rights and the role she plays towards contributing to social justice. Moreover, she was also given the award for her steady devotion in serving the country in fighting against corruption.
The Knight of the Legion of Honour for both military and civil is the utmost honour in France and it was introduced in 1802. Foreign Nationals who live abroad may be presented a distinction of any rank or dignity in the Legion.
“The Knight of Legion bestowed upon Thuli Madonsela is a recognition for her remarkable achievements in the defence of the rule of law and fight against corruption in South Africa,” revealed a statement released by the French Embassy.
Thuli Madonsela has received several rewards for her effort and determination towards fighting for impartiality both nationally and globally, including being honored as the Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) and Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
