The Gauteng department of health has announced that it has temporarily shut down the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday, 17 April 2021.
This comes after a fire broke out on Friday at the hospital’s Special Dispensary Stores, although, it was ultimately controlled. As a result, there were no casualties that were reported.
According to a media statement released by the department, the fire reignited late in the evening. It further disclosed that Charlotte Maxeke hospital evacuated patients to other wards to protect them from the horrific disaster. “We are also looking at evacuating patients from the hospital to other facilities within the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Cluster,” read the statement.

Furthermore, over 415 patients were moved from the hospital to different facilities across the province on Saturday. Details on the cause of the fire were not revealed, however, the Gauteng government stated that relevant authorities will instantly inaugurate with investigations.
The Gauteng Provincial government urged walk-in patients to seek medical services at neighboring facilities. It further disclosed that it has activated the provincial call centre to permit family members of the patients to obtain more information about which facilities their loved ones have been moved to.
