The instructing attorney for accused number one to four in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has decided to take over from Advocate Teffo. This comes after Teffo shocked the entire country when he quit abruptly from the trial.
Advocate Thobane has confirmed that he will proceed to represent the accused himself. According to him, the state has already played a rather dubious role in proving its case against his clients.
Thobane says that he had absolutely no idea that Advocate Malesela Teffo was going to quit. Despite this, Thobane validated that he will be taking over from where Teffo left off.
Malesela withdrew from the trial after claiming that he was continuously being harassed by the state and the presiding judge. Teffo withdrew when the court had just resumed after it was adjourned for almost a month, and he said “It is an opportune moment for me to inform this court that I am withdrawing.”
Judged Tshifhiwa Maumela was forced to postpone the case until they find legal representation for the accused. There were high expectations of a new advocate being brought forward which was worrisome as it would result in further delays.
“When counsel withdrew from the case, he never advised us that he was going to withdraw. I will proceed to run the matter, whether I receive death threats, or they tap my phone it doesn’t matter because all of us are walking in the shadow of death” said Thobane.
“If I was Adv. Baloyi I was going to come on August and close my case. The state case has collapsed, and it is an embarrassment. What I can say is that there is an eyewitness who will come and testify that someone in the house shot and killed Meyiwa” he added.
The trial is anticipated to proceed on 2 August. Thobane remains the attorney on record for accused one to four and will now be leading arguments moving forward to avoid further delays. There are currently over a hundred witnesses who are expected to give their side of the story, therefore nobody knows who will be called and when.
