The murder trial Sindiso Magaqa will begin at the Pietermaritzburg High Court. Magaqa was the former secretary general of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL).
In Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, where he was born and raised, Magaqa was shot and later passed away in a hospital.
The people responsible for his attempted assassination, according to his family, poisoned him. The four men accused of his murder also face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
The trial is set to down to run until 12 August 2022.
The persons accused of murdering Magaqa are Mbulelo Mpofana, Sibonelo Myeza, Mlungisi Ncalane, and Sibusiso Ncengwa.
As of Monday morning, they will go on trial in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Magaqa was shot many times while riding in his automobile alongside Nontsikelelo Mafa and Jabulile Msiya, two other Mzimkhulu council members at the time.
Although everyone lived, Magaqa subsequently passed away at the Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban after complaining of stomach problems.
Three of the accused were released on R5,000 bail each early this year, according to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), while one defendant was detained since he did not request bail.
Until the beginning of next month, the case will continue.
In an ambush in Umzimkhulu five years ago, the former secretary-general of the ANC Youth League was shot.
Magaqa’s two colleague council members suffered injuries, and the 35-year-old passed away a few days later in a Durban hospital.
