One person dies in Kagiso protest

The demonstrators, who have promised to take the law into their own hands, were observed dragging several individuals who were thought to be the illegal miners out of their shacks while they were still clothed.

The death of a person who was slain during a demonstration against illegal mining activities in the area has angered locals of Kagiso in the West Rand, who have accused the police of being responsible. This came when dozens of community members from Kagiso blocked the roads with rocks and debris early on Thursday morning. READ ALSO:Conjoined twins separated in virtual surgery They also blocked entrance and exit points with burning tires, which had an impact on medical and educational services. The demonstrators from Kagiso , who demand that illegal foreign miners leave the community, claim that the police fired on them without warning. They worry that the area has become a crime hotspot due in part to the presence of foreign illegal miners who are well-armed with rifles and other hazardous weapons. The demonstrators, who have promised to take the law into their own hands, were observed dragging several individuals who were thought to be the illegal miners out of their shacks while they were still clothed. On Friday of last week, it was revealed that eight women had been gang-raped after being approached by a group of armed men they assumed to be illegal miners while they were filming near a mine waste in West Village. The horrific rapes took place last Thursday. Since then, police have conducted raids in the neighborhood, and just on Friday and Saturday, over 60 people were taken into custody. This week, the suspects appeared in court on several counts, and they were remanded back into custody.

Food and Fuel prices set to decrease

by Farida Joyce
August 10, 2022

According to the Bureau for Economic Research, households in South Africa may experience some relief in the upcoming months as the price of food and fuel is expected to decline (BER). In a report published on Monday, August 8, analysts at the BER noticed a downward trend in oil prices that, if it continues, will result in a significant reduction in fuel prices by the end of the month. READ ALSO:Boks beat the All Blacks "Brent crude oil's price fell 13.7% for the upcoming month. Since July, the oil price has been affected by concerns about a recession. According to the BER, "brent averaged roughly $105 per barrel in July, down from about $118 per barrel in June, while the average for the first week of August was about $97 per barrel. “Although still early in the month, this could be...

by Farida Joyce
August 10, 2022

Sihle Zikalala has been succeeded as the new premier of KwaZulu-Natal by Nomusa Dube-Ncube. Since the start of democracy in 1994, she becomes the province's first female premier. READ ALSO:Divisions in Cosatu ahead of elective conference At a Monday morning press conference, the newly elected provincial leadership officially announced Dube-appointment. Ncube's Prior to the weekend, three people had begun to gain attention as potential competitors for the position made vacant by Zikalala's departure last week, but Dube-Ncube stood out the most. Mbali Fraser and Amanda Bani were further candidates. Dube-Ncube served as South Africa's ambassador to the Czech Republic and has had a fascinating political career inside the ranks of the ANC, which is currently in power. Dube-Ncube was the mayor of the North Central council prior to the merger, which gave rise to the current eThekwini municipality. She has also held the positions of MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs in addition to serving as the party's main whip in the provincial assembly. The provincial leadership, chosen following an active elective conference two weeks ago, said this Monday that it had received a letter of resignation from Zikalala. Party provincial secretary,...

Divisions in Cosatu ahead of elective conference

by Farida Joyce
August 8, 2022

Deep divides among a number of Cosatu affiliates, the largest trade union federation in the nation, raise the possibility that a contentious race for leadership positions may break out when the group conducts its elective conference next month. Large affiliates of the federation, particularly those in the public sector, are allegedly beset by factionalism that hinders efforts to bring them together in support of those who will run the organization after September. READ ALSO:One person dies in Kagiso protest The leadership succession is traditionally managed via the federation's central executive committee and public sector union organizations like the joint mandatory committee (JMC) to avoid ugly battles that could destabilize the organization. Zingiswa Losi, the president of Cosatu, may seem to be in a strong position to maintain her job, but it has recently come to light that she is facing opposition. Additionally, it has come to light that Bheki Ntshalintshali, the federation's general secretary, was the target of a significant lobbying effort. If that were to occur, he would become the only Cosatu boss since the federation's founding in 1985 to be dismissed after completing one term. Louis Thipe, the second deputy president of Cosatu, is said to have declared she plans to resign. Louis Thipe, the second deputy president of Cosatu, is said to have declared she plans to resign. Freda Oosthuysen, the national treasurer of the federation, is expected to keep her job after being strongly supported by her affiliate, the influential Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu). The SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu), one of Cosatu's largest affiliates, is adamant that the leadership that emerges from the congress should reflect the balance between unions in the public and private sectors. “The leadership should...
