PRETORIA – The City of Tshwane municipality’s failure to provide adequate service delivery to the townships has led to members of the Winterveld community taking matters into their own hands.
Winterveld is one of the communities that struggle to receive fair service delivery, with the bursting of sewage pipes being a common issue in the area.
Bongani Ngwenya (32) and Mandla Nkonyane (35) from Winterveld extension 3, acted after witnessing a devastating moment of a young boy estimated to be 7-8 years of age with a disability playing with the wastewater.
The young boy is not the only child who gets exposed to this contaminated water in the streets, many other children are affected daily.

Ngwenya and Nkonyane have since made it their responsibility to lay a helping hand in alleviating the problem in their area, despite having limited resources.
The two use buckets and long sticks to help unblock the sewage pipes.
We do not have the exact equipment for the sewage problems, but we use what we have and what we get from the community,” Ngwenya said.
They stated that they do have an option to ask for assistance from the municipality or government, but the government will take time and use the situation to one advantage to making money out of the situation.
The 32-year-old explained that he fully understands that the situation might turn out to be another paycheck for someone, especially with township corruption.

The two heroes of Winterveld do not have any educational background when it comes to plumbing but have self-taught themselves to tackle the problem
“I never went to school for my plumbing or know how the whole thing is explained, but I know that the pipe flow in one direction,” he explained.
The duo has since been applauded by community members for their hard work and for lending a helping hand to the problem when the municipality had failed.
