JOHANNESBURG – Advocate Malesela Daniel Teffo has been granted bail of R10 000 by the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court.
This comes after the defence advocate who is the representing four of the five accused in the Meyiwa trial, was arrested on Thursday after court proceedings at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
Teffo was reportedly apprehended for a different case of trespassing which had nothing to do with the Meyiwa murder trial.
He was arrested during a live broadcast of the trial and the videos of his arrest immediately went viral.

Many questioned how the South African Polices Service (SAPS) went about making his arrest.
The accused, who is a former police officer, was then handcuffed and taken to the Hillbrow Police station, where he was detained overnight.

Before Teffo’s court appearance, Tshepo Thobane, the instructing attorney in the Meyiwa murder trial said: “Teffo is fine, I went to check him now this morning. Since I left him at one o’clock in the morning, he was okay. I did not ask him how he slept because you cannot sleep well in a cell.”
According to attorney Thobane, Advocate Teffo did not appear in court the first time because he was ill and had been diagnosed with COVID-19
Thobane did make it clear that his client’s arrest will not affect the murder trial in any way, and that he will still represent the four accused on the 30th of May.
“That trial will proceed and he will be there’’ Thobane said.
During the midst of his sudden arrest, Teffo accused Police Minister Bheki Cele of orchestrating his arrest.
However, Cele has since rubbished the allegations, emphasizing that he had nothing to do with it and only learned of the incident over the phone.

‘’I received a message then immediately contacted the national commissioner to get a full report of what happened and I am waiting for the report,” Cele said.
Advocate Teffo is set to appear in court on 27 May, three days before resuming his defence for the killing of the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper.
