On Saturday 19 June 2021 during a media briefing,The Department of Basic Education, Minister of Education Mrs Angie Motshekga disclosed that there will be a vaccination rollout for educators starting this week.

The Department of Health has a target to vaccinate nearly 600 000 workers in the education sector within ten days. The department of Basic Educations Educators and staff to prepare to be vaccinated.
The Johnson & Johnson jab will be rolled out to educators starting from Wednesday the 23rd of June 2021. There have been many concerns raised about the high rate of new cases in Gauteng Province and how slowly the programme has been going.
Thousands of teachers in Gauteng province have tested positive for COVID-19 recently. Teachers ‘union Sadtu disclosed the race is on for vaccination to be completed before regular timetables resume next month.

It is said that on Wednesday, 46 vaccinations will go live, with some other new sites to be added at a later stage.
Currently South Africa has 300 000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines which are dedicated to the Basic Education Sector, with more doses expected to arrive soon.
