After actor and comedian, Chris Rock made a somewhat distasteful joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, being in ‘G. I Jane 2’ due to her shaved head, Will got up and walked all the way up to Rock, and to his as well as everyone else’s surprise smacked Chris across the face.
Despite the altercation, the comedian continued to present his segment to an audience that seemed stunned about whether or not what transpired was real or just staged.
The 53-year-old won the Best Actor Oscar for the movie – King Richard, shortly after his speech, he went on to apologize to The Academy, his fellow nominees, and the Williams family.
“You’ve got to be able to take abuse, you’ve got to be able to have people talk crazy about you, in this business you’ve got to be able to take people disrespecting you,” said the actor and producer, in tears.
I want to be a vessel for love, I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena, I just better hope they didn’t see that on TV, and thank you to the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story.
I want to apologize to The Academy, and I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award, art imitates life, I look like the crazy father, just what they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things” Smith said.
The Los Angeles Police Department released a statement following the altercation between the two stars stating that none of the involved parties have filed a police report, but they will be available if any should see the need to do so at a later stage.
Smith stands to lose his award for his actions, as it goes against the Academy’s Code of Conduct, which was reinstated in 2017 amid the Me Too Movement which is also known to be against violence, according to the New York Post.
By virtue of breaching the Code of Conduct, he could have his Oscar revoked.
