CRIME – Sibongile Mani has been found guilty of stealing an amount of R14 million accidentally credited to her account due to a systematic glitch.
The amount was deposited into her account back in 2017 and found her having spent approximately R 818 000 with friends, on items such as appliances; weaves; gifts and alcohol amongst other things.
The 31 year old accounting student reported student leader stated that although she had spent the money, she had no intention of stealing money from NSFAS.
She has gained immense support from her peers and other students, saying that she cannot be held accountable for a glitch that she had no hand in.
Magistrate Twannette Olivier found Mani guilty of theft as she was only entitled to R 1400 food allowance however failed to report the R 14 million and knowingly spent it thoroughly different towns.
Social media has since been a buzz with the majority condemning this ruling and others commending the judgement as fair.

“But why isn’t Justice being served to the NSFAS officials responsible, or the corrupt trash who steal MILLIONS from DHET?

“The argument is the person(s) who erroneously deposited the money in her account did not intend to permanently deprive anyone of that money. It was a mistake. She, however, by spending it, did intend to do so. We can only hope the judge will be lenient with sentencing”
