After electricity was cut by the City of Johannesburg (COJ) over the R 168 million outstanding municipal services debt. The controversial agreement between Sandton and COJ has since sparked conversations on social media, which saw the richest square mile in Africa criticized for their actions.
The City of Johannesburg has sent to Sandton City a warning, stating that municipal bills should be paid by the end of February or face termination of services.
A pre – termination notice was sent to Sandton City on February 12 which was set to expire on February 26th thus resulting in Sandton City’s water being cut off.
On Wednesday, the City of Tshwane embarked on a revenue collecting campaign which resulted in several companies, government organisations and entities being targeted as a measure to resolve unpaid bills.
In December 2021, Soweto residents saw their light being cut off after Eskom refused to reconnect their electricity until each household paid a fine of approximately R 6000.
Fast-forward to 2022, many organisations have found themselves to be victims of the City of Tshwane and Johannesburg disconnection spree.
This has since sparked a lot of conversation on social media centred around the theme of “everybody has problems – more money more problems”
