The ongoing rain in Cape Town has caused severe flooding and power outages in parts of the mother city.
This follows a series of cold fronts that hit the province, which the South African Weather Service indicated on Sunday evening. Areas including Eastridge, Bridgetown, Rosebank, Mowbray, Philippi West, Pinelands, Langa, Lansdowne, Brooklyn and Parrow are currently experiencing blackouts caused by the heavy downpours.
Informal settlements including Khayelitsha, Ottery, Langa, Strand and Gugulethu are among those that were hit hard by the severe weather. Unfortunately, many residents were unable to redeem their belongings and housing structures.
So far, no incidents and fatalities were reported. However, roadways and drains are blocked, which are being attended by the Roads and Stormwater Department. Disaster spokesperson for the City of Cape Town, Charlotte Powell, said they had begun mopping-up operations across the city.
According to the South African Weather Services, the heavy rains in Cape Town are set to continue until Wednesday. According to Elani Heyneke, the senior forecaster at the Cape Town Weather office, more rain should be expected. “Scattered showers and rain are expected along the south coast on
Wednesday, where 10-15 mm is possible’’ he added.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said: “we can expect a lot of rain and wet and windy weather over the next few days of this week. Fire and rescue crews are ready to assist with the localized flooding incidents or waterlogged areas.
Residents are urged to stay safe and be on alert as the flooding of roads and informal settlement can result in dangerous outcomes such as missing people, loss of livelihood and livestock, and it may disrupt essential services.
The weather is expected to clear from Wednesday afternoon, with no rain predicted for Thursday and Friday.
