The death toll from this week’s catastrophic floods in KwaZulu Natal has now risen to 59. At least 45 people have been declared dead in eThekwini and 14 others in Ndwendwe, Kwa Dukuza.
The premier of the province, Sihle Zikalala has summoned a special executive meeting to receive the report on this devastating disaster. He is also calling for the declaration of a state of disaster for the province immediately due to the death toll.

Heavy downpours have been destructive in KwaZulu Natal since the beginning of the weekend. This weather has since activated severe floods that have shattered bridges, properties, motor vehicles, and even roads causing significant damage to infrastructure.
Communities residing next to rivers have been notified to relocate immediately, the question is where do they relocate to?

The NPO Meals on Wheels has stepped in to offer relief to families affected by the floods. They started distributing food on Tuesday morning and will continue providing hot meals across the province.
The NPO’s Chief Executive Officer Nelisa Mabenge said “what’s happening in the province is unfortunate and has misplaced many families and put them in a very vulnerable situation. We are making it our mission to see that the many people placed into safe shelters and environments are attended to by receiving a decent warm cooked meal”.

At this point, meteorologists foresee more torrential rain and extensive flooding throughout the Easter weekend. This might lead to multiple drownings, landslides, and power outages.
The country’s president Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit KZN today to access the damage. As far as we know, the damage may be estimated to be billions, but it is yet to be tallied accordingly. The infrastructure in KwaZulu Natal has been strained for years ago due to poor maintenance and now is the time to invest in it.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has called for police interference after it was reported that people are now looting trucks and containers that were swept by the flooding that occurred. In images that have since gone viral on social media, people are seen taking goods from trucks and containers.
