Xolani Masebeni was arrested for allegedly defrauding Absa bank of R103 million, while his ex-lover reportedly received R 290 000 of the stolen funds.
On Thursday, the Palm Ridge Specialised Crime Court saw the arrest of the ex-girlfriend to slain Absa IT specialist – Xolani Masebeni. The arrest took place during the trial of Masebenis’s wife.
The unidentified woman was taken into custody during the appearance Athembile Mpnai (Masebeni’s widow) and her co-accused, Khumbulani Elvis Ntombela alongside Gershom Matomane.
The three are facing charges of fraud and contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
The arrest of the woman whose identity cannot be revealed, comes after Ntombela was arrested on Tuesday in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal.
Her court appearance is expected to be on Friday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane said Masebeni’s former lover was reported to have received R290 000 of the R103 million funds looted from Absa, allegedly stolen by Masebeni.
It is said that Ntombela is to bring his formal bail application next Wednesday.
Mpani is reportedly out on a bail amount of R50 000 while Matomane was released on R30 000 bail.
Xolani who is said to have been an at Absa Sandton offices, allegedly transferred R103 million from the bank into six other bank accounts between September and December 2021.
He was released on bail when he was then shot and killed outside his home in February, at his home in Unathi Mkefa, Ezibeleni – Eastern Cape.
Masebeni’s charges were later dropped after a certificate of his passing was presented to the courts.
Masebeni allegedly accessed a Meridian system to debit the corporate business account.
The Absa forensic division was then able to uncover the alleged transactions and reported the matter to law enforcement.
He was arrested in Queenstown in January and appeared in court the next day.
The case was later transferred to the Palm Ridge Specialised Crime Court due to the crime having happened in Sandton.
