The President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, took a drastic measure on his Twitter account to announce that they will be closing the Eswatini borders that lead to South Africa.

Malema was very specific on the borders that will be closed, the Goleta port of entry in KwaZulu-Natal and Oshoek border port entry in Mpumalanga borders. He was not specific on whether he will be blocking people from entering South Africa or going to Swaziland.
This comes after the event where the channel YeMaswati broadcasted in an almost empty Somhlolo stadium after Swazis boycott King Mswati’s Good Friday services. It is alleged that Mswati unleashed his security forces to shoot and kill dozens of civilians, who were merely demanding a democratic reform during the 2021 massacre.

The EFF has been part of the democratic freedom protest that the eSwatini youth have been demanding for the past 36 years being ruled by a king Mswati. The protest was said to be sprouted by the death of a law student who was murdered in May 2021, and it was believed that the police have been part of the crime.
Another reason behind the aggravated riot was when the authorities in Swaziland banned the submission of petitions to the king, which closed a way of getting the king’s attention on the matter and other grievances and complaints.

The protest followed into a wide range from sporadic arson and looting, vandalization of property, and breakdown in the law and order of the country. The Eswatini law enforcement was deployed by Minister Themba Masuku in his defense he stated that this was to regain the rule of the law.
Swaziland now formally known as eSwatini has been under Monarchy since 1973, putting to rest the country’s democratic constitution, banning all political parties. The country’s decisions and rules are placed on the kings. Making them legal guardienne of the country and the only country in Africa that still practices absolute monarchy.
We have shutdown Oshoek border post in solidarity with the people of eSwatini.
Mswati must account for human rights violations. We also want justice for the 150 Swazis killed by Mswati. #EFFeSwatiniProtests pic.twitter.com/jX6KPDr9Do
